Marc Rahola Matutes

Marc Rahola Matutes
CEO
OD Group
(Spain)

Marc Rahola is CEO and Founder of OD Group, a holding company that includes businesses in hospitality, real estate, private equity, construction, architecture and engineering, and agriculture. His constant desire for new challenges and meaningful evolution of the businesses he has founded, has led him to build this wide-ranging and longstanding portfolio. Current projects see the group managing hotels in Ibiza, Mallorca, Barcelona, Côte d’Azur and developing hotels in Madrid and Miami, as well as developing luxury real estate in Ibiza and Andorra.

Marc has recently moved to London from Ibiza, as he believes the UK and the capital city gives the business an opportunity to learn and improve commercially through the quality talent, networking and experiences it provides. As OD Group continues to evolve into a global concept, London represents a strategic hub for the business in reaching the rest of the world.

Marc was born in Barcelona into a family of entrepreneurs: his father Victor Rahola, a prestigious architect; and his mother Mayte Matutes, a well-respected interior designer. He decided to take a different route studying Business Administration and Management to masters level before joining the wider family business in hospitality, Palladium Hotel Group, in 1998. Today this company manages more than 47 hotels in Spain, Italy, Mexico, Jamaica, Brazil and Dominican Republic, and owns the trademarks; Fiesta, Palladium, Ushuaia, Only You, Ayre Hotels, and Bless Collection (recently launched). Marc is still a member of the board.

During his 10 years working for Palladium Hotel Group, he was lucky enough to be part of a huge expansion, which saw the business invest more than $500 million to grow to over 3,000 keys. Marc’s role involved creating and shaping teams in Mexico, Jamaica, Brazil, Italy and developing processes including acquisition, planning, licensing, and construction. It was a high-pressure time in which he matured quickly and learnt a vast amount of skills.

In 2009, Marc founded OD Group based on the initials of his first hotel, Ocean Drive in Ibiza, which was born out of a belief that there was another hospitality opportunity for Ibiza. Marc Rahola, said: “At that time, there weren’t boutique or lifestyle hotels and those that were smaller and unique focused on hedonistic niches that excluded many people. I was fascinated with boutique concepts like Costes and Pershing Hall in Paris or the Boundary in London and was convinced that this style could somehow be adapted in Ibiza. People said they didn’t think it would work there because of the short season and no potential to charge the kinds of prices these other cities could command, however I really believed it could work.”

From that first hotel, Marc and his team has built a collection that sees each hotel as an experiential hub that connects the guests to their surroundings and enriches their stay in the destination.

Marc is always looking at the sector and the wider world and from that has created a group of businesses, and people within them, that focus on being able to adapt and evolve in new disrupting scenarios.

Marc believes: “Nowadays the behaviours of clients are changing quicker than ever before and those companies which succeed are those that are flexible to adapt to this, such as Airbnb, Uber, and WeWork. I think the most decisive component in this flexibility is the team and their ability to understand changing behaviours, question the current approach, and openness to adapt and evolve.”

Marc loves a challenge and has even been known to say that mistakes make him feel alive. He really approaches all his businesses with the ethos that there’s only one life and once it’s done there is no going back. He believes in facing challenges head on and learning from mistakes, rather than living in fear and then regret.

The OD Group portfolio includes:

• OD Hotels

• Ryans Hotels&Apts. (Hotel)

• The White Angel (Real Estate)

• Roca Borras (Construction)

• Ocean Almond (Agricultural business)

• EIH (Hotel Supplies)

• OD Project Monitoring (Architecture and Engineering)

• Ocean Group Capital (Private Equity).

Family is hugely important to Marc, and he attributes a lot of his success to the support of his wife, parents and aunts. Outside of work, Marc loves to travel, especially getting lost in a European city with his wife and children - walking through its streets, museums, and restaurants for hours. Marc believes having interests outside of work is essential for a balanced and productive life. Marc also takes time to decompress by cooking and playing the guitar, something he started at university where he had his own rock band.
